ECOschools

Congratulations to the SHS ECOteam. Sydenham High School was one of two schools in Limestone this year who achieved Gold Certification from Ontario ECOschools. SHS ranked first overall with a score of 87.75 points. Congratulations to the entire team who worked hard this year to increase awareness of eco-friendly practices and to develop ecological literacy among our staff and students.

Some of the SHS ECOschool initiatives included: A Bottle Water Free Day, Earth Hour, Poster contests, tree planting, school ground greening, Earth Day activities and garbage pickup, an Earth Works Carousel ‐ showcasing student work and ECOschool Projects, Student Videos and ECO artwork, weekly recycling/garbage audits, and regular advertising of ECO‐friendly practices via our school newsletter, local newspapers, morning announcements, the school website and SYDHS TV.

When Adam Wilson (grade 12) of the ECO team was asked how he felt about receiving Gold Status he responded..”It is an honour to be recognized. Our Environmental Resource Management Class worked hard to organize the Earthworks Carousel and Earth Day activities. We had lots of students participating.”

Nicole McIlroy and Cassie Snook (grade 12)…”We are thrilled. What a great accomplishment for SHS. We have helped to raise awareness of the importance of conserving energy and reducing waste.“
