Coalition for Eco-Justice

An interschool group of students committed to ecological justice in secondary schools (visit us at the La Salle website)

Our goal is to convince the Limestone District School Board to award new cafeteria contracts in secondary schools to companies who will use only biodegradable containers for food. We are opposed to the use of oil-based containers (like plastic and styrofoam) for four principal reasons:

  1. They contribute to landfills.
  2. They pose health risks to people who eat food contained by plastic.
  3. They are not renewable and ultimately, more expensive.
  4. Hydrocarbon use contributes to global warming.

We've all heard of the Three ‘R's - Reduce, Re-use, Recycle. Perhaps you have also heard of the fourth ‘R' which stands for ‘Reject'. Rejecting the use of hydrocarbons will have both an immediate and lasting impact. The immediate impact will be felt in how much garbage we produce. We can also take satisfaction from knowing that we are living more sustainably.

There is no doubt that the Limestone Board and parents continue to speak for the nutritional needs of students who purchase food in our cafeterias. That is good, but now we need voices to speak up for the planet. The Coalition for Eco-Justice speaks for the planet and we'd like your support.

Petition We, the undersigned students and friends of Secondary Education in the Limestone District School Board are gravely concerned. Our concern is about the state of the planet and what we can do about it. We'd like to enlist the Board's support in a initiative that could have big consequences. We'd like to produce less harmful garbage by making sure that only biodegradable containers are used by the business(s) awarded the food services contract for our school(s). We urge the Limestone Board to lead the way to a more sustainable world and healthier planet!
