The La Salle Heritage and Memorabilia Committee
and the Memorabilia Project

2003 - The La Salle 35th Anniversary Reunion Committee graciously acknowledges and thanks the Pittsburgh Community Benefit Fund for its contribution of $7,500.- that has gone towards the La Salle Memorabilia Project and the construction of new display cases for the front foyer.

The Committee also wishes to acknowledge and thank Dave Kotowych (Class of 1979) for his very generous donation of $2,000.- to support the construction of the display cases. Thank you so much Dave!

The Memorabilia Project and Display Cases were unveiled during the 35th Anniversary Reunion.

In 2001, a few retired teachers (Tom Waugh, Stan Palmer, Dick Duff, Marina Smith, Gail Buchner, Dave Brownell, Paul Gilmore, Leon Doucet) and La Salle's principal (Mr. Andre Labrie) established the La Salle Heritage and Memorabilia Committee.

The aim of the committee was to collect, identify and preserve items that relate to the history of La Salle Secondary School. With that in mind, the committee began by asking present and former staff for anything they may have that is part of La Salle's history. Many examples of

  • team uniforms
  • pictures
  • slides
  • plaques
  • pins
  • pennants
  • drinking glasses
  • hats
  • videos
  • news articles
were donated to, or provided for the committee's use. The committee was able to set up a fairly large display in one of the display cases for the 2002 spring graduation.

The committee is asking all alumni to look for any memorabilia they may possess and consider donating it or loaning it. If loaned, it will be copied or photographed, and returned. If you have anything at all, big or small, please contact Tom Waugh at and arrangements will be made to obtain your memorabilia.

The committee believes that it would be beneficial for La Salle, its present students, its alumni, and the La Salle community, to have a permanent heritage display case in a prominent location in the school. The funding and construction of this new display case has become known as the Memorabilia Project.

The curved wall in the foyer was chosen as the site for a case measuring approximately 44 feet in length and built to match the style and size of existing cases in the foyer. The case will actually be divided into six glassed display cupboards each separated by a two foot panel. The cupboards will house the memorabilia, while the panels will display the black and gold crests chosen by the students of each grade in the school to represent their graduating year.

As the students graduate, their year's crest will be officially installed on the large ring below the windows in the school's cafeteria. A crest chosen by the incoming grade nine class will fill the empty panel in the display. The center panel will have the school's crest on it. Plans are currently underway to create crests to represent the students of every graduating year since La Salle's first in 1968. It was planned that these will be in place for the Reunion.

It is said that in 1969, the graduating class presented the school with a crest bearing features wrought by hand in metal and leather on a base of birds-eye maple. This crest hung in the foyer for a number of years on the curved wall where the display case was built. It has not been seen since the mid 1970's. The committee would like to find this crest and consider it for the central panel in the display case. Any alumni who know the whereabouts of this crest or may be able to shed light on what has happened to it are asked to contact Tom Waugh at .

La Salle Alumni, remember that the Reunions and the items you contribute, plus the Memorabilia Project which was built to house those items, are all part of your history at La Salle Secondary School.
