PHYSICAL HEALTH & EDUCATION            

 

The emphasis of the KCVI physical education program is on active participation in physical activity. The program promotes enjoyment of, and regular participation in, physical activity and healthy active living. The courses will help students understand how their personal actions and decisions will affect their health, fitness and well-being. All courses offered by our Active Living Department address relevant health issues and provide students with a wide variety of activities that promote fitness, the development of living skills, and personal competence. The primary focus of these courses is on helping students develop a positive attitude and commitment to lifelong healthy active living and the capacity to live satisfying, productive lives.

PHYSICAL HEALTH & EDUCATION COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 

PPL1OK          Healthy Active Living Education, Grade 9, Open

This co-ed course emphasizes students' daily participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong, healthy, active living. Students will learn movement techniques and principles, ways to improve personal fitness and physical competence, safety, and injury-prevention strategies. They will investigate issues related to healthy sexuality and the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and will participate in activities designed to develop goal-setting, communication, and social skills. Students will also receive the opportunity to be certified in CPR.

This course is also offered as an extended/immersion French course.

Students will participate in a variety of games of low organization, individual and team sports/activities, and international games so that they may discover lifelong, healthy activity. Field trips involving rock climbing, skiing, skating, swimming and hiking may also be supplemented to enhance learning experiences.

PPL2OK          Healthy Active Living Education, Grade 10, Open

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong, healthy, active living. Student learning will include the application of movement principles to refine skills; participation in a variety of activities that enhance personal competence, fitness, and health; examination of issues related to healthy sexuality, healthy eating, substance use and abuse; and the use of informed decision-making, conflict resolution, and social skills in making personal choices.

This course is also offered as an extended/immersion French course.

Continue in your pursuit for improved life-long fitness, and create a balance to your semester with this course. There will be lots of opportunities here to try something new – from lacrosse to tennis. Out-of-classroom opportunities are also possible depending on class interests, including possibilities ranging from curling to wall-climbing.

Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health, and personal safety.

PAF3OW/PAF4OW    Live Fit - Girls - Personal and Fitness Activities, Grade 11 and 12, Open

This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle and participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that have the potential to engage students’ interest throughout their lives. Students will be encouraged to develop personal competence in a variety of movement skills, and will be given opportunities to practice goal-setting, decision-making, coping, social, and interpersonal skills. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health, and personal safety.

Any girls who are interested in learning more about fitness and health from a female perspective are encouraged to take this course. We will explore activities that will enable you to include practical physical activity into your lifestyle. Come try some yoga, power walks and learn fun resistance training – see what a difference it makes for you!

PAF3OK/PAF4OK Power Fit - Co-ed - Individual & Small Group Activities, Gr. 11 & 12, Open

This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle and participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that have the potential to engage students’ interest throughout their lives. Students will be encouraged to develop personal competence in a variety of movement skills, and will be given opportunities to practice goal-setting, decision-making, coping, social, and interpersonal skills. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health, and personal safety.

Activities in our Fitness Centre including resistance training, cross-training, and cardiovascular endurance activities organized in a personal training format form the core of the active training sessions in this course. Further topics include nutritional supplements, training systems, plyometric training as well as student-driven training issues.

PAI3OK           Martial Arts

This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle through participation in a traditional martial arts curriculum. It is designed to foster body awareness, physical strength and muscular endurance, physical coordination, self confidence and respect for self and others. Students will be encouraged to develop personal competence in a variety of self defence activities, and will be given opportunities to practice goal-setting, decision-making, social, and interpersonal skills. The core active curriculum will be centered on goju-ryu karate-do. Fitness and self defence activities will be organized around individual, paired and small-group instruction. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health, and personal safety.

Successful students in this course can expect to progress towards an orange belt grade by the end of the course. This course may also be taken as part of the Japanese Studies Focus Program. See the LDSB Focus Program information booklet for further details.

PPL4OK          Healthy Active Living Education, Grade 12, Open

This course focuses on the development of a personalized approach to healthy active living through participation in a variety of sports and recreational activities that have the potential to engage students' interest throughout their lives. Students will develop and implement personal physical fitness plans. In addition, they will be given opportunities to refine their decision-making, conflict-resolution, and interpersonal skills, with a view to enhancing their mental health and their relationships with others.

This course is also offered as an extended/immersion French course.

PSE4UK          Exercise Science, Grade 12, University Preparation

This course focuses on the study of human movement and of systems, factors, and principles involved in human development. Students will learn about the effects of physical activity on health and performance, the evolution of physical activity and sports, and the factors that influence an individual's participation in physical activity. Topics include skeletal and muscle anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology, training and conditioning theory, and socio-cultural aspects of sport and physical activity.

The course helps prepare students for university programs such as physical education, kinesiology, recreation, physical or occupational therapy, and sports administration.

Recommended prerequisite: Any grade 11 or 12 university or university/college science course.
