GUIDANCE, CAREERS & LEADERSHIP

"Your life is the sum result of all the choices you make, both consciously and unconsciously. If you can control the process of choosing, you can take control of all aspects of your life. You can find the freedom that comes from being in charge of yourself."          - Robert F. Bennett

Prerequisite: None

GWL3OC        Co-operative Education

Are you curious about your future career? Do you want to “test a career” before leaving high school to enter the work force or enrol in a college or university? Co-operative Education gives you this opportunity. The teacher, the school and employer collaborate to design a job description which meets your needs. In exchange for the time you spend “on-the-job”, you earn diploma credits.

Co-operative Education helps you explore your interests, develop specific job skills, obtain career-related experience, develop attitudes for success in the work place, gather references for your resume, and earn credits towards your OSSD.

The Co-operative Education Program will consist of a two credit package, normally occurring during the afternoon, offering practical hands-on experience and an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills outside the classroom. Four credit packages are possible by special arrangement and require a full day placement. The Co-op placement will be linked with an academic credit already achieved or currently being undertaken. Placements are based on student interest and are available in virtually any area of work.

The course consists of three sections:

  1. Orientation - minimum 15 hours  (resume writing, job application forms, interview skills and school and work-place expectations)
  2. Placement - the time spent on the work site - 190 hours
  3. Integrations - minimum 15 hours of issues related to work and school.

Students will be assigned tasks in the workplace and be evaluated on both in-class assignments and work place tasks.

Students wishing to enrol in the Co-op program should indicate this in the appropriate space on the option sheet and will require an interview with a Co-op teacher. Co-op credits are subject-based, which means the co-op credits are linked to a completed or current course. Please speak to a counsellor in Student Services to see how Co-op credits fit into your plan to achieve a diploma.
