GEOGRAPHY COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

                                                           

CGC1DK         Geography of Canada, Grade 9, Academic

This course uses a variety of frameworks, including ecozones and principles of physical, human, and economic geography, to explore the distinct and evolving character of Canada's geography. Students will investigate the interconnections between the environment and human activities in Canadian ecozones in order to understand Canada's diversity and role in the world. This course is also offered as an extended/immersion French course.

CGC1PK         Geography of Canada, Grade 9, Applied

This course draws upon students' everyday experiences and uses a variety of frameworks, including ecozones, to help students learn about the geography of Canada and the country's place in the global community. Students will investigate the interconnections among the country's land forms, climate, soils, plants, animals, and human activities in order to understand Canada's physical character and diversity, and various kinds of interactions.

CGG3OK        Regional Geography: Travel and Tourism, Grade 11, Open

This course focuses on travel and tourism to examine the unique characteristics of selected world regions from a geographic perspective. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation of the ways in which the natural environments, economies, cultures, and other aspects of world regions interact.

This course is offered every other year. The next offering will be in 2010/2011.

CGD3MK         The Americas: Geographic Patterns and Issues, Grade 11, University/College Preparation

The course explores the growing interdependence of the Americas, from northern Canada to southern South America, through the study of geographic systems, patterns, and issues. Students will use geographic methods and skills to investigate a wide range of topics, including natural systems, resource development, population patterns and trends, evolving trading blocs, and geopolitical partnerships.

This course is offered every other year. The next offering will be in 2009/2010.

Prerequisite: CDG1DK or CGC1PK

 

CGU4UK         World Geography: Human Patterns and Interactions, Grade 12, University Preparation                 

This course examines how cultures in different parts of the world interact with their environments and with each other. Students use geographic concepts, methods, and tools to explore settlement patterns, human migration, cultural change, globalization, environmental issues and other topics relevant to an understanding of how spatial, political, economic, and social factors affect human activities. This course compliments the World Issues course while learning about the cultures of the world regionally. These regions include: Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and the African continent.

This course is offered every other year. The next offering will be in 2009/2010.

Prerequisite: Any grade 11 or grade 12 university/college preparation course in Canadian and world studies, English, social sciences and humanities.

 

IB Geography Course One: CGF3MB (Physical Geography)

 

IB Geography Course Two: CGU4UB (Canadian and World Issues)

The IB Geography program is a more comprehensive view of geography as it examines both human and physical themes. Both the standard level and the higher level courses are designed for the student who is interested in pursuing contemporary global issues, environmental studies and field work. Skills focus on data collection and interpretation, map design and interpretation and issue analysis. The common core theme; Population, Development and Resources is found in both courses, as are two optional themes, Ecosystems and Globalization. The higher level syllabus requires study in two additional units, Settlements, and Rivers and Drainage. The IB curriculum emphasizes Internationalism and therefore case studies and issues are discussed from around the globe.

Prerequisite: Grade 9 Academic Geography (CGC1DK, CGC1DI/E)

CGW4UK        Canadian and World Issues: A Geographic Analysis, Grade 12, University Preparation

This course draws on geographic concepts, skills, methods, and technologies to analyse significant issues facing Canadians as citizens of an interdependent world. Students will examine the challenges of creating a sustainable and equitable future through the study of a range of topics, including economic interdependence; geopolitical conflict; regional disparities in the ability to meet basic human needs; and protection of the planet's life-support systems.
