In most situations it is a joint responsibility of the student and the parent to see that appropriate courses are taken to:
· fulfill diploma requirements; and
· satisfy admission requirements for post-secondary institutions.
Students in their first three years are expected to carry a full course load (4 credit courses) each semester. Graduating students (year 4) are expected to take a full course load (3 or 4 credit courses) each semester to qualify for full time student status, and to achieve more than the minimum number of credits required for the diploma (see page 16).
It is very important that students make proper, informed course selections. Changes to course selections after the timetabling process can restrict a student’s access to needed courses.
In order to ensure that the timetabling process can occur in a timely manner and that students have access to desired courses, online course selection timelines must be adhered to.
Before selecting courses it is essential that students carefully consider two important questions:
At the present time, what is my planned destination after high school?
How much time do I plan to take to complete high school?
Destination
It is essential that in the selection process course choices are made which cater to the student’s destination of choice – whether a student is planning to attend university, attend community college, pursue an apprenticeship, enter the workforce or remains undecided. If a student is unsure of the relationship between particular courses and particular destinations, the student should make an appointment with KCVI Student Services to discuss the matter.
Time
Determining how much time a student plans to take to complete high school will have a significant influence on the course selection process. Students should carefully weigh the pros and cons of taking 4, 4.5 or 5 years to graduate before selecting courses.
All grade 9 students must take 8 courses in 8 subject areas.
When filling out the Course Selection Form, grade 9 students need to consider the following:
· the preferred level of French instruction (Core French, Extended French, Immersion French) for the grade 9 French course. For information regarding these choices see the Languages portion in the Course Description section of this book.
· the primary language of instruction for Mathematics, Geography, Physical Education and Computer Applications/Exploring Technologies (English, French Extended, French Immersion). For information regarding these choices see the Languages portion in the Course Description section of this book.
· the academic stream in which English, Science, Mathematics and Geography will be taken (academic or applied). See the Support Resources and Services section of this booklet for more information on choosing an academic stream.
· which Arts option (Visual Art, Drama, Instrumental Music or Vocal Music) the student would prefer.
