Every Grade 9 student takes a total of eight credits. They may be a mixture of Academic, Applied, and Open types. These credits represent 8 compulsory courses.

 

Core Courses

All Grade 9 students must take eight subjects in their first year of secondary school:

 

·         English

·         Science

·         French

·         Healthy Active Living

·         Mathematics

·         Canadian Geography

·         Arts (Drama, Instrumental and Vocal Music or Visual Art)

·         Exploring Technologies or Information Technology in Business

 

 

 

Choosing a Grade 10 Program    *  *  *  *  *

 

As in Grade 9, students in Grade 10 take a total of eight credits which again can be a combination of Academic, Applied, and Open types.

 

Core Courses

Every Grade 10 student will take the following six subjects for a total of five credits:

·         English

·         Science

·         Mathematics

·         Canadian History

·         Civics (˝ credit)

·         Career Studies (˝ credit)

 

Elective Courses

Students have a wide range of choices for the remaining three credits, including courses from the Arts, Business, Computers, Languages, Physical and Health Education and Technology. Please refer to the course descriptions section (following) and the Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirements listed on page 16. Students can meet the requirements for compulsory courses by choosing courses from the three groups of additional credits listed in the compulsory credits column.

 

Choosing a Grade 11 Program    *  *  *  *  *

 

Compulsory Year 3 (Grade 11) credits are English and Mathematics. Be sure to check diploma requirements for other compulsory areas you may still need, such as Group 1, 2 or 3.

 

Eight credits must be taken.

 

This year’s selection determines your post-secondary destination. Be sure to see a Student Services counsellor and/or check University/College booklets for post-secondary prerequisites.

 

Choosing a Grade 12 Program    *  *  *  *  *

 

The compulsory Year 4 (Grade 12) credit is English. Be sure to check diploma requirements for other compulsory areas you may still need, such as Group 1, 2 or 3.

 

A minimum of six credits must be taken.

 

Be sure to see a Student Services counsellor to ensure that your program will meet any required postsecondary prerequisites.
