Why study Business? The majority of high school graduates will be involved in business in some way, whether they go on to work in retail or office management, become self-employed, study business or whether they pursue other studies and later move into a management position.

 

In any of these circumstances, a background in business studies will be valuable. However business knowledge is also extremely useful in your personal life.

BUSINESS COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 

BTT1OK          Information and Communication Technology in Business, Grade 9, Open

This course introduces students to information and communication technology in a business environment and builds a foundation of digital literacy skills necessary for success in a technologically driven business world. Students will develop word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, presentation software, and website design skills with an emphasis on business application. Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on effective electronic research and communication skills and students will develop transferable skills for use throughout their high school career.

This course builds a foundation for further studies in business or computer studies and helps students develop the business knowledge and skills they will need in their everyday lives.

This course is also offered as an extended/immersion French course.

BBI2OK           Introduction to Business, Grade 10, Open

This course introduces students to the world of business. Students will develop an understanding of the functions of business, including marketing, accounting, information technology, human resources, and production, and of the importance of ethics and social responsibility. This course continues to build a foundation for further studies in business and introduces the students to portfolio-based assessment.

Students will have the opportunity to network with local area business entrepreneurs, take part in field trips and participate in DECA marketing and leadership competitions.

BAF3MK          Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Grade 11, University/College Preparation

This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and procedures of accounting. Students will develop financial analysis and decision-making skills that will assist them in future studies and/or career opportunities in business. Students will acquire an understanding of accounting for a service and a merchandising business, computerized accounting, financial analysis, and current issues and ethics in accounting.

Students will have the opportunity to compete in various accounting competitions and financial contests. This course is strongly recommended for students considering post-secondary business studies.

BAT4MK          Financial Accounting Principles, Grade 12, University/College Preparation

This course introduces students to advanced accounting principles that will prepare them for postsecondary studies in business. Students will learn about financial statements for various forms of business ownership and how those statements are interpreted in making business decisions. This course further develops accounting and decision making methods for assets and introduces accounting for partnerships, corporations, and sources of financing.

Students will take part in discussions pertaining to real life business issues and compete in several university sponsored stock market challenges and provincial accounting contests.

Recommended Prerequisite: BAF3MK

 

BMI3CK           Marketing: Goods, Services, Events, Grade 11, College Preparation

This course introduces the fundamental concepts of product marketing, which includes the marketing of goods, services, and events. Students will examine how trends, issues, global economic changes, and information technology influence consumer buying habits. Students will engage in marketing research, develop marketing strategies, and produce a marketing plan for a product of their choice.

The course includes a number of local field trips and exposure to guest speakers from the Kingston area business community. Students will have the opportunity to participate in local, provincial as well as international marketing and leadership conferences and competitions sponsored by DECA, an internationally recognized student marketing association.

BBB4MK         International Business Fundamentals, Grade 12, University/College Preparation

This course provides an overview of the importance of international business and trade in the global economy and explores the factors that influence success in international markets. Students will learn about the techniques and strategies associated with marketing, distribution, and managing international business effectively.

This course prepares students for postsecondary programs in business, including international business, marketing, and management. Students will engage in a number of networking opportunities with local businesses and take part in provincial business competitions.

Prerequisite: Any university, university/college, or college preparation course in business studies, economics or Canadian and world studies.
