ARTS - MUSIC

Music courses provide students with a variety of excellent opportunities that are unique to music. Students develop individual skills that increase self-confidence and enhance self-discipline while they experience the joy of performing in a co-operative and collaborative learning environment.

Instrumental music enhances critical and creative thinking skills in several disciplines. Music is a universal language – a highly developed shorthand that uses symbols to represent the elements of music. It is a physical activity that requires complex hand-eye co-ordination and coordination of fingers, hands, and facial muscles. Music rhythms are instantaneous math calculations. A conductor’s score is a scientific chart which indicates frequencies, volume, melody, and harmony. Students in an instrumental music class and band bring this score to life through performance.

Instrumental music students have the opportunity to extend and refine their performance skills in the co-curricular band program. Students in Grade 9 are invited to participate in the Junior Band which performs in the Holiday and Spring Concerts and at the Annual Music Festival at Canada’s Wonderland. Students in Grades 10 through 12 usually participate in the Senior Concert Band which performs in the Holiday and Spring Concerts and in a variety of other venues. Members of both bands have the opportunity to experience a variety of other activities including musicals, festivals, and band trips to places such as New York City.
